from college grad, to being a Dad...

Through college... to being a Dad, and looking back...

My mission was to create a blog, to spread words of awareness to the conflicting issue regarding what it means to be soulfully happy within yourself, and most importantly for yourself. Living in such a large and empowering world we tend to loose ourselves all while creating ourselves. What is most boggling about this is finding that balance between what is you, what isn't and deciding if you are influenced to become your own character or if we hit an age where we need to be aware about our vulnerability to our environment; can we gain control and fight being overly influenced- and what does our future look like if the affects of media and societal influence are only growing in strength?
 Sitting with a good friend, Jason who not only recently graduated from college with a vast view on this particular topic but also recently becoming a Dad has scooped his mind of new ideas for how his vision as a child was like versus now.

Meditation- is it the vehicle to a true sense of self?

How do we find the meaning of happiness? Is there such a thing? What does happiness mean to you?

Being that the world we live has become so competitive in the aspect of business, and marketing has it become the same for each and every piece of who and what we are?

Let’s take a brief moment to reflect on our sense of self. Think about how much the average individuals day, or your own. Think about all of the action, people, communication, sound, scenery and emotion seen, but also the relationships, objects, feelings, and thoughts that are understood and process of understanding. Our environment greatly affects who we are, but there are plenty of ingredients needed to make-you!

So now that you have a strong sense of the power of your (or an individuals) environment, think about all that you choose to expose yourself too; such as facebook. Videogames, television, magazines, blogs, radio, there are a million ways one can be impacted by naturally but also by choice.

So- Is it possible to find inner truth disconnected from the world?
What if an individual chose not to include him or herself from the daily activities that he or she chose to include in his or her own life.  Although, there is much little control over what an individual is still exposed to naturally unless one moves to a land in the middle of no where-but even then, there may still be things that impact a persons sense of self.

I think it is important to understand the ways and areas the media and society may be impacted. Our way of the world is centered by ideas of marketing and business techniques. What this questions is if these same ideals are interpreted into how we feel and connect ourselves to the world?

We know to understand we find a way to relate, As do most business men working collectively to form this pattern of competition and learned style of interpreting the meaning of the world. Are we then robotically adjusting to relationships with others including ourselves in the same way in which we connect to objects.

Is this the reason for divorce rate being so high, rape, teenage pregnancy, etc.
Lets think about the average pre-teen, or tween when a new cell phone comes out and becomes extremely popular. They usually want it and have to have it, with this idea attached to what life would be like or change with it. This is not seen to the individual themselves that this is temporary, because when the next edition of that phone comes out- all the ideas of the original phone are quickly dropped and applied to the newly advertised phone. Do we do this with everything, have we become so bored and so thirsty for constant entertainment that we have created a loosing battle to find  happiness within ourselves?

Who are we without it all? When we meditate can we hear, feel or think of the world in any different manor?

I found this very interesting reading, although I found it difficult to find out any deeper info. on the author etc. I wanted to share it, the first paragraph alone says a lot. It was a powerful read I thought many would enjoy.

What helps you to relax and find peace, can you- do you feel a sense of total comfort in who you are, where you live, and all that you have done and plan? Does meditation work, or does it only temporarily quiet the mind? What are some of your thoughts?
This particular article covers several interesting points about what the uses of meditation are but also the ideas of finding your sense of self...

Killing Us Softly- Reaction!

Although this particular post may be some what choppy, I wanted to take the time, to write this post on a film that I had the opportunity to watch in class; "Killing Us Softly", by Jean Kilbourne.
For those of you who do not know this film, I will start to introduce you to the host and brain behind the operation, Jean Kilbourne herself;

Jean Kilbourne is today recognized for her work with the image of women portrayed in advertising and the media. She started her studies in the late 1960's and covered many issues that women deal with such as eating disorders, addiction, violence, and several health issues; these studies brought her to the creation of her powerful journey to encourage the necessary education in these areas in connection to the portrayals of females in the media and society.

I wanted to discuss the general theme of this film and the few versions of this particular film that she has done. I came home from class after watching this film; I would be lying if I didn’t say  that a majority of the comments
and images from the film stayed in my mind on the ride home, but also left several luring lines bobbing around my brain.

I could not sit and let these thoughts rattle, so I felt I needed to take the opportunity to share this startling and ever so encouraging video with you, I state "startling" in a positive way- if that is possible?
 I say startling mostly because; I was not expecting this type of message to be portrayed in such a way that Jean herself laid out the message. Although I feel that Jean personally did a fabulous job interpreting the importance of her reasoning behind creating this film I feel most of the statements made as well as real life examples both in video and photo shown spoke for themselves.

was specifically touched by this film and several clips from other videos that she has done because of her voice and heart of passion. Everything that she states, and shares is also felt. Jean touches upon very interesting points but also brings up several interesting questions; for example,

“Is the reasoning for increased sexual violence towards females of all ages a cause to the inappropriate images we are surrounded by today?”

Also, “How can a women win in a world full of Marketing- because that is what we live in? How can a women be thin but not too thin and not to fat? Eat whatever she may but not gain an ounce, be confident but constantly put down?”

She also brings about the several directions that women are specifically forced to be in today, she touches on issues such as women in the workforce, financial abilities and control but also control over themselves- the need for women to be displayed as emotional monsters and care takers but also as beauty perfectionists in a unrealistic manor. I drew upon questions for myself such as, “How can women be proud of themselves and be balanced emotionally when everything in todays world helps us to hate ourselves. I feel constantly challenged by the messages that the media and society feed to my mind!”

My favorite section of this film, was the part when she states a comment that Cindy Crawford has made herself; stating; “I wish I myself, looked like Cindy Crawford” as she goes into detail of the dynamics and details of the world of Photoshop and lies advertising takes to make a quick dollar.

I had to take the time to write this post; specifically because in the very beginning of this particular film, she addressed a conflict I have seen repeatedly in previous posts. Jean has stated that there are many people that state things such as, “ I am not affected by the media, I turn my mind off to those silly things”. But as Jean explains the media is a quiet enemy because no matter how strong someone may be mentally being surrounded and bombarded with false images of advertisements and such can, will and do affect us all subliminally. There is no way to fight that. Not even if you are Jean Kilbourne herself. If you ask her, she seems to be fairly confident with that if you educate yourself enough on this specific †topic you will be a much stronger individually.
I wanted to know what your views of this issue? Do you think that you are undefeated or are you strong enough to block these impetuous negative messages fed to us by society and the media?
Let me know what you think, I would love to hear some more opinions!

Here are several other clips of Jean Kilbourne’s work;

There is not much for me to say other than having to jot this down and wanting to share this powering movement; It speaks not only for itself but I feel it is so strong you may even find our mind speaking its own opinions as well;

There are several videos of Jean Kilbourne, please feel free to view as many as you may like- They are all interesting! http://www.makers.com/jean-kilbourne

Perspectives from The Poet, himself.

Hello Blogger Fans!

So far I have touched upon several aspects, issues and interesting points of all the ways people may, are and can be affected by the media.

During the course of this semester, I have debated several thoughts about the issues of society and media consciously and subconsciously influencing the average individual. I never came to any conclusion, nor did I have any sort of revelations. While I was introduced to the world of blogging I thought this would be an opportunity to hear what others think? This also offers the chance to bring awareness to this conflict.

Personally, having experienced plenty in my young age, I choose to appreciate the up’s and down’s because it has shaped me to be who I am today, but also prepares me for what lies ahead of me.

When any individual’s faces challenges in their life such as I, it brings many doors of opportunities as well as new people whom are included in the shaping of who you are- that’s right, your friends, family and loved ones impact you similarly to how the media and society do. While I started writing this blog, I was also working on another project that paralleled this topic.

With research, thought and time I found myself aimlessly typing and searching the web for ideas- I then bumped into Poet Ali. I had an odd connection to him, I felt compelled to reach out and connect him to the program I was working with. Although making this connection was more complicated then I had hoped we became friends and he had a strong and balanced mindset to understanding the idea of this blog.

He goes by the name is Poet Ali, and if you ask him he is “Older than the Sun, Moon, and Stars”. Poet Ali is a very gifted and talented artist; he currently raps and performs to cause a reaction quite differently than most of the music you hear today. He was born in Tehran, Iran and immigrated to the U.S. when he was just 3 years old as a result of the Iranian Revolution in 1979.

Like many other Iranian families, it was not easy leaving behind the land known to many as “home”. Poet Ali, does all that he can to keep his heritage alive, while being so far away makes it difficult to keep connected to his family that still remains there. Although, he uses some of this emotion along with the struggles he has faced in life as inspiration to create his music.

Poet Ali doesn’t remember a time when music and dance weren’t apart of not only his life but who he is. Although it took him some time, and different styles of music to find what fit him he always had a natural drive and desire to learn about his interest in music.

Along with his growing passion for music, he always had something in him that allowed him to want to change the world. He never knew how until he was presented with the opportunity to work with an organization known as Rachel’s Challenge.

Working with Rachel’s Challenge has given him the opportunity to work with children everyday, while sending, giving and telling the overpowering story of Rachel Scott; who was the first student shot and killed in the Columbine High school shooting.

Growing up in a very large tight knit family has taught and given Poet Ali some of the most important and valuable lessons about life. He feel’s that the issue of the media and society affecting our mind, is a something that cannot be ignored. This is because everything that surrounds us shapes our thinking and view of the world, as well as ourselves. Many of us look to the world to determine most things in our lives, it is powerful and we cannot always help it. He feels everyone should understand this, but also interestingly he feels that the media may be influential both positively and negatively but holds no win when it comes to good parenting.

Although the media and society may have a stronger impact on children because they are more vulnerable, According to Poet Ali, it is solely up to parents and families to teach their children about the world and themselves; because each and every person including artists and celebrities can only speak about there own “reality”, and of course everyone’s is different. Poet Ali states a very important point, while some celebrities and artists may be aware of there strong impact on others, selling music is there responsibility not always teaching, parenting and or being a role model although in many sad situations there is not always this option.

Poet Ali does not feel that the media empowers him in any way, even though he uses a lot of the media for work. This particular portion has stayed in my mind since interviewing Poet Ali for this post. He said that in the past there were times he was impacted and weighed down by it negatively and in his words sometimes “disgusted by it!”; at this time he thought of the media as a hammer- but as he stated exactly;

“I realized like any tool in a tool box, it is up to us to use it in the way that we need.”

The media in Poet Ali’s eyes will always have its own agenda, but even the most successful people have learned to view this same idea and created there own systems to make it work for them.

Poet Ali, has seen a lot of the world. He went to Primary and Secondary school in between San Diego CA and Orange County CA, and after high school moved to Los Angeles for College and studied English, Spanish undergrad with a minor in dance. During College he visited and decided to live in Madrid Spain shortly after his study abroad. He also briefly lived in Northern Italy. He believes that the presentation of beauty varies with and for every culture as well as to the eyes of the beholder.

Poet Ali continues to write with much motivation to the “freeing” sense for himself; to him there is nothing better than being true to your individual self. This does not always mean that everything he writes is positive but they’re positive and negative in the world. It is important for Poet Ali to be aware of this, especially in himself, there are things in life we like and love, but also things we may not if you can accept this you can learn to better who you are. He also feels that building bridge between one’s emotional and personal self with the universal truth is something that everyone can relate to. And for him, his fans are his driving force for motivation.

Today technology is a place where everyone can share a piece of who they are but also to create an image of themselves. Poet Ali feels that this is a great advantage for him because his art is his life and who he is, and the ability to be able to share that is powerful because without it; his fans would not be able to motivate him like they do.

Poet Ali hopes to spread his work more as well as his intention to make a difference in the world. To Check out some of Poet Ali’s work check out his pages; And don’t hesitate to “like”, “share” or even send him a message letting him know how you feel about his work, He is an open person and has a lot to offer the world and his music speaks for itself- CHECK HIM OUT, I’m a fan!
